13U Warriors claim Mayor's Cup

The Cedar Rapids Warriors 13U youth baseball team capped off an undefeated 6-0 weekend run by winning the 2012 Mayor's Cup at Tait Cummins Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.

The Warriors wend 3-0 during pool play Friday evening and Saturday morning, picking up complete game wins from Ben Friedman and Marcus Coleman, as well strong hitting from Spencer Henningsen, Ben Friedman, Nick Bjorenson and Andrew O'Neill.

The Warriors entered bracket play Saturday afternoon as a #1 seed. Winning a tight game against against the Warrior 13U Blue squad, 5-4, in the opening bracket game, the Warrior Red then made short work of the Kennedy Jr Cougars and the Mt Vernon Copperheads in shortened run-limit games to claim the pool crown.

The Warriors squared off against Linn-Mar White, the winner of the "B" pool, for the age bracket championship. Riding some timely power hitting, good pitching from Spencer Henningsen and aggressive base running, the Warriors moved out to a 6 run lead after 3 innings, eventually finishing up with a 7-3 lead after 5 innings to claim the age bracket championship.

Andrew O'Neill, from Warrior Red squard, was selected as a tournament MVP.
