STANWOOD - 'I'm not nervous, I'm not nervous now because both of you have made it to state,” Mike King said.
King, North Cedar's assistant coach, made that point during his drive to the second round of last week's state tournament in Des Moines.
'Anything you boys do will be a bonus,” he added.
The North Cedar community felt they did get a bonus when two wrestlers - Trever Greene at 132 pounds and Clayton Juhl at 195 pounds - advanced to state wrestling. Juhl earned a higher seed based on his district title. Greene was a district runner-up. Juhl was a returning state qualifier, winning his fist two matches last year before losing three and placing sixth.
Juhl wrestled Ryan Evens of Jesup in his first match last week and won, 7-1. He then wrestled seventh-ranked Andrew Olsen of Lake Mills and won, 4-1, securing a spot on the podium. Juhl lost in the semifinals to second-raked Zach Hickson of Gilbertville Don Bosco, 8-5, dropping him into the consolation side of the bracket. In the consolation semifinals, Juhl lost a 4-3 decision to eighth-ranked Brennan Grimm of English Valleys, putting him into the fifth-place match against sixth-ranked Tyler Larson of Nashua Plainsfield. Juhl lost, 2-1, in overtime, ending the tournament with a 2-3 record and in sixth place again.
Greene wrestled top-ranked defending state champion Hunter Washburn of Alburnett first round, losing 14-5 and putting him in the consolation bracket. He won his first consolation match, beating Griffen McBride of Pleasantville, 10-5, before getting pinned by fifth-ranked Dylan Schuck of Sibley-Ocheyedan.
Both wrestlers finished their careers with more than 100 wins. Juhl ended up with 116, Greene 103. Both are thinking about wrestling in college, but have not committed yet.
