State track has concluded and some Iowa high school baseball programs will welcome back regulars that competed over the weekend. Here is a look ahead to some noteworthy matchups this week.
Solon earned its first state runner-up team finish in 2021 and followed it up with another in 2022. The Spartans are back again and they are tired of silver.
Lisbon was one of three Gazette area state track and field team champions; Solon’s girls repeated in Class 3A, and Williamsburg shared the 2A boys’ crown with Mediapolis.
Gracie Federspiel blazed to the Class 3A girls’ 800-meter championship at the state track and field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium. She was a major reason — but far from the only one — that the Spartans repeated as 3A team champions.
Mount Vernon came out of the second heat and won the Class 3A boys’ distance medley relay at the state track and field meet Friday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
Friday’s Class 3A girls’ state track and field roundup: A distance medley triumph, coupled by Sophia Stahle’s title in the 400-meter hurdles, sent Solon to the top of the 3A girls’ leaderboard heading to the final day.
Thursday’s Class 3A girls’ state track and field roundup: Sydney Maue is a self-described, “self-taught” high jumper. Maue cleared 5 feet, 6 inches and earned Class 3A runner-up girls’ honors.

Very young, inexperienced, undersized, all that combined to make Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s boys basketball team less than stellar in the early going this season. But the Cougars have figured things out despite three freshmen who are playing big roles and are on a five-game win streak after Monday night’s 72-68 win at Linn-Mar.
