CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The St. Francis (Ill.) women's soccer team overcame the elements on Tuesday, getting the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to edge Mount Mercy, 2-1, at Lower Kingston Field.
The two teams competed in a downpour most of the way and endured a weather delay in the 25th minute when lightning halted play for almost 45 minutes. The game was tied at one after Debbie Rios scored for the Saints (2-0-0) in the fourth minute and sophomore Cara Evans answered 12 minutes later on an assist by senior Mallorie Jorgenson.
Ashley Sikyta set up the game-winner by Brooke Polus in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Jerica Christensen stopped three shots for the Mustangs (1-3-0) and the Saints' Danielle DeMent saved five of Mount Mercy's six shots on goal.
The Mustangs host Mount Marty (S.D.) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Lower Kingston Field.
