DES MOINES, Iowa -- Mount Mercy missed an opportunity to take an early lead while 13th-ranked Grand View capitalized on several scoring chances in a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs in the championship game of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Thursday at the Cownie Complex.
The top-seeded Vikings (18-1-0) got on the board first when Augustine Faiz headed in a cross by Ryan Adamson in the 12th minute. Moments earlier, the second-seeded Mustangs (15-6-0) hit the crossbar on what could have been a game-changing goal. An own goal by Mount Mercy put Grand View up 2-0 in the 54th minute, and Luis Heiter-Piffer's score nine minutes later sealed the deal for the Vikings.
Mount Mercy finishes one of the best seasons in school history at 15-6-0 overall, one win better than the 1999 squad that ended up 14-7-0. The Mustangs end the year with 46 goals scored, which is second all-time to that same 1999 team that scored 48 times. Mount Mercy's goal differential of +17 is also second in school history to the +19 margin posted in 2008.
