SOLON - The Iowa City Regina attack resembled the video game Space Invaders in which wave after wave of attackers keep coming and you try to defend by picking them off one by one. That approach didn't work very well for a banged-up Solon team Wednesday. The 1A second-ranked Regals rolled to an 8-0 victory.
Jenny Wick scored four goals, Lauren Ronnfeldt two and freshmen Lauren Gaarde and Megan Wick one apiece.
'It's toward the end of the season so our ball movement should be where it's at,” Jenny Wick said. 'It really showed in this game.”
'We all created a lot of really good chances and capitalized on them,” Ronnfeldt said. 'We kind of have a better understanding of each other's runs and how each other plays. We connect really well now.”
Regina Coach Stephanie Rauckhorst said her team's attack has to be that effective and the key is the support the forwards get from the midfield.
'We talk about working together as a unit, and they've come together these last couple games,” she said.
Megan Wick, who plays goalie in junior varsity, scored her first goal.
'That was awesome,” big sister Jenny said. 'I didn't expect that. She's a body that you know will be strong on the ball and when she has an open goal you know she'll strike the heck out of it.”
Regina (12-2) plays again Friday against No. 4 Davenport Assumption, the defending state champion.
Rauckhorst likes the challenge.
'The kids worked so hard and they really dug deep and found the strength to beat (3A) Muscatine,” she said. 'So it is a great way to go into tournament play.”
No. 11 Solon (11-5) needs to get healthy in a hurry and not dwell on this score.
'Obviously, we've got some things to fix,” Coach John Tucker said.
'We have to get people healed. We're really hurting. We might have to shift some people around.”
