CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's soccer team is battling for home field advantage in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament, and Saturday's 2-1 victory over Viterbo (Wis.) moved the Mustangs one step closer to that goal.
Freshman midfielder Ramiro Alonso scored an an assist by junior forward Enrique Cortina in the 20th minute to get the scoring started at Lower Kingston Field. After Viterbo drew even 10 minutes later, Alonso set up sophomore midfielder Juan Maffey for what turned out to be the game-winner in the 35th minute.
With only two regular season matches remaining, the Mustangs (7-5-2, 5-1-0 MCC) are in second place in the MCC, one-and-a-half games back of sixth-ranked Grand View (14-1-0, 7-0-0 MCC). Ashford (11-4-0, 5-2-0 MCC) and Clarke (8-7-0, 5-2-0 MCC) are right behind Mount Mercy. The top four teams in the league host a first-round match in the MCC Tournament.
The Mustangs host the Crusaders on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Lower Kingston Field in a game that was postponed from Oct. 12. Mount Mercy wraps up the regular season against Grand View on Senior Day on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Lower Kingston Field.
