MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- Sophomore midfielder Juan Maffey and senior goalkeeper Josh Putz, two instrumental players in Mount Mercy's run to a share of the Midwest Collegiate Conference title, have been honored by the league.
Maffey is the MCC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 23 after he scored a goal in each of Mount Mercy's victories last week. His sixth goal of the season came in a 3-0 win over Clarke, and his team-high seventh score of the year was a golden goal in Saturday's 2-1, title-clinching victory over sixth-ranked Grand View.
Putz, the MCC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, won both games in goal for the Mustangs, including his third shutout of the season against the Crusaders. He's now 7-1-1 on the year after stopping eight shots in Mount Mercy's win over the Vikings.
The top-seeded Mustangs host eighth-seeded Iowa Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the MCC Tournament on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Lower Kingston Field.
