Enrique Cortina scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute Wednesday night, giving the Mount Mercy men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Upper Iowa in non-conference action at Tuma Soccer Complex.
It was Cortina's second goal of the game. He gave the Mustangs (2-4-1) a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute on an assist by freshman midfielder Miguel Perez. The Peacocks (1-3-1) squared the match with a Derek Oelmann score in the 57th minute before freshman Henok Russell set up Cortina's game-winner 21 minutes later.
Although each team finished with 13 shots, Upper Iowa placed seven on goal compared to just five for Mount Mercy. Andy Youde made three saves for the Peacocks, while senior keeper Josh Putz stopped six shots for the Mustangs.
Mount Mercy is on the road for its Midwest Collegiate Conference opener this weekend, traveling to Oskaloosa to battle William Penn on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
