WAVERLY – Using a strong offensive attack, Wartburg College posted 51 second half points to highlight an 89-80 Iowa Conference win over Loras Jan. 12.
The junior forward tandem of Jordan Sathoff of Packwood and Cole Danielson of Marshalltown led the charge. Danielson, who entered the evening on a run of three straight 20-point-plus games, added his fourth consecutive such effort with 27 points to go with nine rebounds and two steals, also team highs. Sathoff added 24 points, two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
Wartburg (6-7 overall, 1-4 IIAC) needed every bit of its 54.5 percent shooting from the field as both teams were prone to scoring streaks. The Duhawks (5-10, 2-4) opened the game with a 10-1 run before an 18-2 roll put the Orange and Black in front. Coach Dick Peth's team held a 38-32 halftime advantage and increased the lead to 11 early in the second half. Loras used a 21-5 stretch to overtake its hosts for a 65-60 lead with just under 7:50 to go, but the Knights answered with a 16-7 run of their own and held on down the stretch.
Wartburg continues league play with a 4 p.m. tipoff against Coe Saturday, Jan. 15. The game is set for Eby Fieldhouse on Coe's campus in Cedar Rapids.
