Cornell hammered in four first-half goals and climbed back over the .500 mark with a 5-1 nonconference victory over Beloit Sunday afternoon in Beloit, Wis.
The Rams moved to 3-2 on the season, already surpassing the team's 2010 win total under first-year head coach Kirsten Russell.
Cornell, which dropped a 6-0 home contest to Upper Iowa Saturday, broke out of a two-match scoreless skid in a big way against Beloit. The Rams got goals from four different players and forged a 4-0 lead just 31 minutes into the match.
Sophomore Chelsea Harris opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal off an assist from freshman Kaci Jazo at the six-minute mark. Beloit countered with a score in the 17th minute, but it was all Rams the rest of the way.
Senior Rachel Wynn put the Rams back ahead at the 19-minute mark, scoring off a pass from junior Alexia Zebroski. Jazo then fired in a pair of goals in a span of 56 seconds late in the first half to give Cornell a 4-1 cushion. The two unassisted tallies moved Jazo's season goal total to four, most on the team.
The Rams finished the rout after intermission with an unassisted goal from sophomore Kendra Wisely in the 64th minute. Cornell outshot the hosts, 17-9, and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Kassi Todryk registered her third complete-game win of the fall. She finished with three saves.
Upper Iowa took control early in Saturday's win over the Rams. The Peacocks scored twice in the opening five minutes and led 4-0 at halftime. Upper Iowa owned an 18-4 advantage in total shots.
Jazo was in on two of Cornell's shot attempts. Todryk covered up six saves over 90 minutes.
Rams in the rankings - Through two weeks of competition, Todryk leads all Iowa Conference keepers with 6.8 saves per match. She has 34 saves on the season.
Jazo is among the league's top scorers. She ranks fourth in goals scored (0.80 gpg) and is sixth in points (1.80 ppg).
Coming up - Cornell is on the road Wednesday to face Clarke in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff in Dubuque. The Rams return home Saturday to play Waldorf at 1 p.m., before traveling to Monmouth (Ill.) Sunday for a 3 p.m. start.
