Cornell dug itself a big first-half hole and never got back on track in a 63-35 loss to UW-Eau Claire Sunday at Zorn Arena.
The Rams (2-2) were limited to five field goals in the opening 20 minutes and trailed 31-12 at the break. Cornell's cold shooting continued in the second half as the Rams finished the game 12-of-49 from the field.
UW-Eau Claire (4-2), which returned four starters from last year's 15-win team, set the tone with a 21-5 run to begin the game. The Blugolds built the lead to 41-12 five minutes into the second half.
Junior Camille Marie-Lidd was the lone Ram to score in double figures, netting 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Kathryn Schilling added five points, three rebounds and two steals.
Freshman center Taylor Dicus grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go with four points in 21 minutes, her first extensive time of the season. Leonie de Jonge chipped in five rebounds.
UW-Eau Claire held a 39-32 edge on the boards and forced the Rams into 20 turnovers. Cornell shot 3-of-21 from 3-point range.
Coming up - Cornell's 15th and final season in the Iowa Conference gets underway Wednesday night with a 6 p.m. tipoff against four-time defending league champion Simpson (4-1) in Indianola. Simpson, the favorite to claim this year's conference crown, received one vote in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll.
