WAVERLY – Wartburg College gained a pair of victories in Iowa Conference dual play against league-leading Coe April 15.
Coach Matt Tyler's squad, despite falling to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the IIAC with a 7-2 loss, picked up a number one doubles win from junior Chris Buckingham of Waverly and sophomore Josh Trueblood of Bettendorf to go along with a singles' decision for sophomore Blayne Willadsen of New Hampton. Willadsen's three-set thriller over the Kohawks' Michael Janssen (6-2, 4-6, 10-5) upped his win skein to five. Buckingham and Truebloods' 8-6 victory over Curtis Newman and Kyle Tucker evened their season mark at 4-4.
Sophomore Brian Rasmussen of Fort Dodge and senior Anthony Greco of Boone played well in singles, too. Rasmussen took Scott Stegemann to a tiebreaker at number two, while Greco fell 7-6 in the second set to Tucker at number five.
The Orange and Black are scheduled to resume IIAC dual play Friday, April 29, when Luther College of Decorah visits Waverly for a 6 p.m. first serve.
