Cornell had a sizeable lead taken away down the stretch and dropped its final nonconference game of the season, 71-66, to Dominican Monday afternoon at Igini Sports Forum.
The Rams (2-10 overall) were in position to claim their second straight win, leading the hosts by eight points on four different occasions in the final 12 minutes of play. Dominican (3-9) rallied with an 11-4 game-ending run and hit its final six foul shots to escape with the win.
Sophomore point guard Reggie Greenwood led the Rams with his second 22-point outing in as many games. His two free throws pulled Cornell to within 67-66 with 41 seconds remaining. Dominican answered with two foul shots, forced a Ram turnover, and then put the game away with two more free throws with 16 seconds to go.
Greenwood knocked down three of Cornell's five 3-point goals and went 7-of-7 from the foul line. Junior forward Rory Cotter recorded his first double-double of the season, totaling 10 points and 11 rebounds. John Harth chipped in nine points off the bench. Nick Bobb contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Alex Miller finished with seven points and a game-high six assists.
The Rams led for a large portion of the second half and matched their biggest margin of the game at 58-50 on a David Fischer bucket with 7:45 to go. After the Stars charged back to tie it at 60-60, Cotter converted a layup that gave Cornell its final lead at 62-60 with 3:44 remaining.
Cornell shot a respectable 49.1 percent from the field and drained 9-of-10 free throws. The Rams held a 27-23 advantage in rebounds and committed just 13 turnovers. The big difference was at the foul line, where Dominican made 12 more free throws and finished 21-of-27.
The Rams went on a 7-0 run to end the first half and were tied 32-32 at the break. Dominican shot 46.5 percent from the field, including 10-of-22 from 3-point range.
