Cornell College now has its first softball All-American.
Senior Carly Goolsby was named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-American Second Team, it was announced by the Association on Thursday.
Goolsby was selected to the 15-player second unit as a designated player. She joined five other honorees from the Iowa Conference, which included Central's Kiley Lythberg (first team) and Katie Tenboer (first), Luther's Lexy Determan (second) and Kelsey Weindruch (third), and Coe's Abby Flannagan (second).
It's been quite a postseason for Goolsby, who earlier last week was chosen to the NFCA All-Midwest Region First Team as designated player. She is the first Cornell softball player to claim first team all-region accolades and reach All-America status.
Goolsby, a second team all-IIAC pick, split time as the team's catcher and designated player this spring. She posted a team-high .424 batting average and 53 hits, just two hits shy of the school's single-season mark. Goolsby slugged .536 and carried a .467 on-base percentage, reaching safely in 37 of her 38 starts.
Goolsby scored 30 runs and drove in 21. She had nine doubles, one triple and a home run. Goolsby was one of the toughest batters to strike out, fanning only six times in 125 at-bats. She registered 17 multi-hit games and put together an impressive 15-game hitting streak to start the season.
Goolsby closed her collegiate career with 104 hits, good for eighth on the school's all-time list. She also ranked third in career batting average (.377) and fourth in on-base percentage (.417).
Goolsby steered the Rams (25-14 overall, 7-9 IIAC) to their first-ever 20-win season, culminating with the program's first IIAC Tournament win May 6 in Decorah. Cornell also cracked the regional rankings for the first time in school history.
