Flores sets passing records for Cornell

MOUNT VERNON – They lost, but the Cornell Rams made a good account of themselves last week against heavily favored rival Coe. Particularly quarterback Juan Flores.

The junior from California set single-game school records for completions and attempts in a 34-14 loss at Ash Park. Flores threw for 358 yards, fourth-best in school history.

“I feel a lot more comfortable this season,” Flores said. “It seems like the game has slowed down for me. It was really fast when I was a freshman, and it got slower last season.”

Flores had a combined 2,600 yards passing and rushing last season. He has completed 57 percent of his passes this season, for 658 yards and five touchdowns.

His 30 completions last week broke his own school record of 28 from last season. His 58 attempts were nine more than Anthony Kobler's record 49 in a 2005 game against Wartburg.

Coe also hits the road to take on Washington (Mo.). Dubuque hopes to rebound from a loss last week against nationally ranked Wisconsin-Platteville, when it hosts Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Wartburg also is at Carthage (Wis.).

-  Upper Iowa officially opened Harms-Eischeid Stadium last week with a 45-20 loss to NCAA Division I nationally ranked St. Cloud State, 45-20.

An announced crowd of 1,160 celebrated Upper Iowa's first-ever home night game. The school's football stadium, originally known only as Eischeid Stadium, is undergoing a $7.5-million renovation and transformation thanks to a financial gift from Steve and Diane Harms, a former UIU football player and cheerleader.

The transformation includes the installation of FieldTurf, lighting, a walking track, enhanced sound, increased seating, a multi-use press box and installation of professional grade scoreboard with large-screen video.
