Cascade captured the opener, 6-1. Class 2A No. 10 Dyersville Beckman rebounded with a 9-5 victory in the nightcap for a River Valley Conference baseball doubleheader split Thursday night at American Legion Ballpark in Cascade.
Dyersville Beckman’s Drew Thier drove in five runs in a 7-5 victory in the opener. Cascade’s Eli Fritz provided a quality start for a 6-3 win in the nightcap of a River Valley Conference North Division doubleheader Thursday in Dyersville.
Senior Jase Reinke has become a reliable pitching option for Class 2A No. 7 Cascade. He leads the Cougars in innings pitched and worked 4 2/3 of relief in a 7-2 victory over Alburnett for his third win of the season.
Cascade and Dyersville Beckman share a love for baseball and one of the top rivalries in the state. This year marks the second time and the first in 40 years that both reached the state tournament.
Cascade has won four straight games, including three against Class 2A teams that have been ranked by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. The Cougars are 10-2 and No. 3 in this week’s Class 2A poll.
Cascade received a solid outing from sophomore D.J. Soper and scored four runs in the first inning for a 6-3 victory over rival Dyersville Beckman.
Cascade’s Eli Green pitched six scoreless innings and the Cougars took an early lead with a four-run first to beat Anamosa, 7-0, in a Class 2A District 9 semifinal.
The Cougars tallied 18 runs on 14 hits to defeat Cedar Rapids Washington in their final tune-up for the Class 2A postseason.
