On Thursday and Friday (Feb. 5-6), girls wrestling in Iowa will be on full display inside Xtream Arena in Coralville for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) state wrestling tournament. Action gets underway with Class 1A at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Kiersten Swart, Carly Elliott, Adeline Whisner, Kaylee Kintzel and Gracie Pinckney make up the first four-year senior class for Mount Vernon’s girls wrestling program.

Friday, it all comes down to this. It’s Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) Regionals at various high school sites across the state, with action getting underway at 4 p.m.

Their reward was Liberty’s first-ever Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) team title, as the two seniors used their individual championships to propel their team to the top. The Lightning dethroned back-to-back champion Cedar Falls with 238 team points.

The Vinton-Shellsburg senior earned her 200th win just a few weeks ago, becoming the state’s first female wrestler to reach that milestone.

In middle school, Gracie Pinckney wanted to go out for a sport. But, it wasn’t on a mat, and it wasn’t during the winter.It was on the gridiron. It was football.

It’s a new show in town with trailblazing sophomore Irys Benesch and freshman Alexis Williams leading the team, alongside veteran North Linn wrestling coach Brad Bridgewater and assistant coach Justin Kress.

Despite overcoming some first-meet jitters, McCabe helped lead the Stormin’ Pointers to their first girls’ wrestling dual meet win in school history, defeating West Delaware, 30-26.
