Taco Depot expanding to Iowa City

IOWA CITY — The Taco Depot is planning yet another expansion — this time in downtown Iowa City.

The Cedar Rapids-based restaurant announced plans on April 12 for its first location in Iowa City at 119 E. Washington St. — the former home of Tiki Tacos n’ Burgers n’ Wings, next to Target.

A social media post from The Taco Depot said they hope to be open by the end of May.

The Iowa City location will be its fourth opening and its fifth location in planning.

The upcoming Marion location, announced in December, still is in the works. The post noted that location will take longer, since it’s being built.

With three locations already, the Red Fox Way building in Marion was originally The Taco Depot’s first venture outside of Cedar Rapids. Its last opening in late 2021 was at 35 Miller Ave. SW.

Brandon Ryan opened Tiki Tacos in April 2021 — his first time owning a restaurant after working various positions at other restaurants over several years. It’s unclear when Tiki Tacos closed, although its social media has been dormant since November 2022.
