CEDAR RAPIDS — Rustic Hearth Bakery on Mount Vernon Road will close soon if another buyer doesn’t step in to keep it open.
"Unfortunately, due to ongoing staffing issues, I plan to sell the bakery. My wish it to sell to someone who wants to carry on making out great products," owner Tom Schmitt said in a social media post Tuesday.
The bakery, started by Schmitt inside NewBo City Market in April 2015, moved to a brick-and-mortar location at 3531 Mount Vernon Rd. SE in 2019.
One of his signature sourdoughs, The Beast, is made from a fermented wild yeast he's kept alive for over 15 years. With flour he grinds personally, Rustic Hearth has six varieties combined to make multiple flavor profiles.
