NewBo City Market announces culinary camps for kids

Jun. 13, 2024 6:15 am
CEDAR RAPIDS — NewBo City Market, an incubator of many fledgling restaurants and small businesses in Cedar Rapids, has announced a series of culinary camps for kids through June and July.
The Summer Culinary Camps series offers three unique themes, hands-on activities, and fun learning experiences for children ages 7 to 12.
The first, Cuisine Around the World from June 17 to 20, will let kids learn about various cultures through food by exploring dishes from Italy, Japan, Mexico, and more. While cooking popular dishes, they’ll learn basic phrases from each country’s language and will explore cultural attire.
The second, Farm to Table Adventures from June 24 to 27, celebrates all things inspired by the garden. This camp show campers where their food comes from by researching and visiting local farms, understanding how to harvest their own ingredients, learning how to grow herbs and vegetables, and making meals with their fresh produce.
Food Truck Frenzy, NewBo City Market’s last camp from July 8 to 11, will have campers create a mini food truck festival where they’ll design their own food truck concept and cook dishes to serve to their peers. Throughout the week, campers will immerse themselves in the art of street food cuisine, entrepreneurship and essential cooking skills by exploring diverse flavors.
Camps will be instructed by Carly Hachey, a Linn-Mar teacher with 17 years of classroom experience.
