New Jersey bagel shop to hold pop-ups at NewBo City Market, Marion

Even more variety is just around the corner for NewBo City Market, which will see a new bagel shop starting this week.

From April 7 to 23, Baltimore-based Bottoms Up Bagels (BUB) will bring its New Jersey-style boiled bagels, spreads, lox and breakfast sandwiches to Cedar Rapids from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

That operation will be temporarily interrupted on Wednesday, April 12 to host a pop-up at the Marion Public Library from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The pop — up is part of the “BUB Roadshow,” where their crew is testing the concept in new markets. Bottoms Up Bagels has been soliciting social media followers since summer 2022 for nominations of cities for the tour.

“Cedar Rapids offers us an ideal use case. One key connection led to another, and it snowballed from there,” said Joan Kanner, BUB’s co-owner and chief vision officer. “The area has all the growth and support a business like ours is looking for to expand. Now, it’s just about fit, and this is our chance to test that.”

The small batch bagel shop known for its dense, chewy style started in 2015 as a pop-up at Baltimore area farmers markets, art galleries and breweries. It won Baltimore’s Best Bagel title in 2018.
