HIAWATHA — The HACAP Food Reservoir is hosting its Community Food Drive throughout the summer.
HACAP Food Reservoir calls on businesses, organizations and individuals to help alleviate stress placed on homes and families struggling with food insecurity while children are home from school in the summer.
The drive, formerly known as the Eastern Iowa Freedom From Hunger (EIFFH), will collect food donations from June through Aug. 31. Drives will be held at the HACAP Food Reservoir’s Hiawatha location, 1515 Hawkeye Drive, in addition to other spots across Benton, Jones and Linn counties.
This year, the drive has added three rural locations to expand the event. All food donations go directly to partner agencies supporting families in a seven-county service area. Donations in rural events will go directly to pantry locations in those areas.
HACAP Food Reservoir distributes millions of pounds of food through a network of local food pantries, nonprofits, schools and churches. It also partners with community agencies to target programs like mobile food pantries, the BackPack Program and senior food drops.
Suggested non-perishable food donations include
- peanut butter
- whole grain crackers and pasta
- brown rice
- tuna or chicken canned in water
- canned vegetables
- juice
- whole grain oats or cereal
- fruits canned in juice
- canned soup
- beans and lentils
- nuts, seeds or dried fruits.
Please do not donate dented cans or unlabeled foods.
