Chew on This: Alebrije Mexican restaurant opens in Iowa City

Alebrije, an upscale, modern Mexican restaurant held its grand opening in Iowa City on Nov. 11, after initially opening Sept. 10 at 401 S. Linn St. in the downtown Riverfront Crossings district.

Owner Fernando Weber describes the restaurant as “a modern restaurant rooted in tradition and the true flavors of Mexico.”

In addition to an extensive menu, the restaurant offers an adventurous drink menu with several variations of margaritas and sangrias, as well as craft beer and tequila options.

Weber said the restaurant took three years to organize.

“Alebrije is a restaurant I’ve been thinking about for about half of my life,” he said at the grand opening, detailing inspirations as his family moved to the United States from Mexico, when his father started working in restaurants.
