IOWA CITY — On the heels of a new distribution center and Cedar Rapids taproom opening, Big Grove Brewery is climbing to new heights thanks to a new THC drink partnership.
Iowa’s top craft beer brand by sales has purchased a majority share in Climbing Kites, Iowa’s first cannabis-infused sparkling water, with plans for immediate direct-to-consumer expansion in 42 states.
The brand, currently available at Big Grove Brewery taprooms and other retail locations in Iowa, gives consumers a new way to get a buzz without alcohol thanks to its federally legal THC derived from hemp. The drink was launched in 2024 by Des Moines’ Lua Brewing team and co-founder, Scott Selix.
“This partnership just made sense for Climbing Kites,” said Selix, who noted that combining forces with Big Grove will leverage their scale and market route to “allow us to keep up with existing demand and continue the growth of the product lineup.”
The product “hits on all levels for people looking for a great alternative to some of our other products,” said Big Grove’s Chief Growth Officer, Dave Moore, who was also appointed as CEO of Climbing Kites.
With no alcohol, calories or sugar, the naturally gluten-free and vegan product shows promise as an alternative to beer to “deliver a different feeling that consumers are looking for,” Moore said.
The THC drinks, which also contain CBD, are currently available in Mixed Berry, Pineapple Passion Fruit, Orange Mango and Peach Prickly Pear flavors at varying THC levels from 2.5 to 15 milligrams. The brand plans to release a new flavor, Grapefruit Guava, with THC only, as well as a Key Lime Kiwi flavor with caffeine.
“We’ve been excited to partner and collaborate with Climbing Kites, not just for the brands and products as they stand today, but also for innovation within this new space,” said Moore.
