Backyard BBQ opens in former Cedar Rapids bowling alley

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Texas-style barbecue restaurant has opened in southwest Cedar Rapids.

Backyard BBQ Iowa opened on June 15 at 2020 Scotty Dr., the former home of Westdale Bowling Center.

The opening from owners Khamnoth Lovanh and Sandy Ting comes after months of renovations. The restaurant first started to post to social media in April 2024.

Diners may recognize Ting, who is an owner of Ting’s Red Lantern, a Chinese restaurant in northeast Cedar Rapids.

The new restaurant’s menu includes smoked Texas-style classics including brisket, pulled pork, ribs and unique brisket smash burgers. It will soon have a full bar as well, pending liquor license approval.

The restaurant is open 4 to 9 p.m. daily.
