The NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships are set for the finals. Here are some takeaways from the tournament heading into the championship bouts.

Zach Glazier secured the victory for the second straight dual, Bradley Hill capped Friday night with his own decision and the Iowa men’s wrestling team downed Penn, 22-13, at The Palestra in Philadelphia.

No. 4 Iowa won six matches, including three straight from 174 to 197 that seal the victory, and defeated No. 8 Iowa State, 18-14, in front of 14,267 fans Sunday at Hilton Coliseum. The Hawkeyes earned their 19th straight win over the Cyclones.

Iowa men’s wrestling coach Tom Brands emphasized the importance of opportunities. Opportunities for some new faces that popped out of the transfer portal, ones in front of younger Hawkeyes with the potential to break through and the possibility to reclaim opportunities for some Hawkeye veterans.

Real Woods moved one step closer to a national title dream after a runner-up finish to Northern Colorado’s Andrew Alirez at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Saturday at BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Iowa’s Real Woods, Iowa State’s David Carr, Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen and South Dakota State’s Tanner Sloan, a former Alburnett prep, finished second in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

When Real Woods advanced to the NCAA wrestling finals, the Iowa celebration was subdued. The win came on the heels of a crushing loss that shocked the Hawkeyes and most of the wrestling world when Purdue’s Matt Ramos derailed Spencer Lee’s attempt for a fourth national title.

Iowa’s Real Woods was impressive in his 9-0 victory over Missouri’s Allan Hart in the 141-pound quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Friday at BOK Center. Woods was one of three Iowa semifinalists, joining Spencer Lee and Tony Cassioppi and helping Iowa into second place after the third session.

Spencer Lee’s dominance highlighted second-ranked Iowa’s opening day at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, moving five into the quarterfinals with all 10 left in the tournament. Iowa State’s David Carr and Marcus Coleman advanced. UNI’s Parker Keckeisen moved into the quarterfinals.

The brackets for the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships were released Wednesday. Iowa duo of Spencer Lee and Real Woods were No. 1 seeds at 125 and 141, respectively. Iowa State’s David Carr and UNI’s Parker Keckeisen were top seeds at 165 and 184.
