The Iowa Photo: Walk this way

They say life imitates art, and I immediately thought of that when I snapped this photo. This was my first time covering a NASCAR race, and it lived up to the hype. The energy of the pit as the drivers prepare to start their engines gives everyone a unique sense of thrill you don’t normally experience in your day-to-day life.

Shortly after the drivers got in their vehicles, there was a mad dash from pit crew members to get to their stations. As I was watching from the “cold” side of the pit I thought it was funny that some were carrying suitcases and it almost looked like a scene at the airport, except everyone was in a jumpsuit, so I thought why not take a photo to see how it looks?

When I reviewed the image I immediately was hit with the image of The Beatles walking on Abbey Road and knew I was onto something. I went back and took about 50 shots to get the right spacing between everyone and finally got this photo.

I love the humor in the fact that it almost replicates a daily commute -- the only difference is it’s just down pit road.
