The Iowa Photo: Lunch and listening
Kirkwood Community College sessions give music students chance to perform

I was out hunting for feature photos and my editor encouraged me to visit Kirkwood Community College to find some unique photos. I wanted to focus on Iowa Hall because many of the students use this space to eat lunch, study and hang out.
As I was walking around I heard instruments being tuned, which led me to the Iowa Hall stage. Kirkwood music students were set to perform for a lunch and listen event hosted by the arts department. Just outside the stage was a temporary wall that had a series of holes in it. The holes perfectly framed the students as they performed, and I knew I had found my shot.
I shot through different-sized holes, adjusted my height and walked closer and farther away from the stage until I had an array of shots to choose from. Ultimately this one stood out to me as Liam McGovern played with his jazz combo band. The white background helps him stand out from the gray foreground.
The arts department will host two more lunch and listens this month: 11:15 a.m. Nov. 13 on the Iowa Hall stage and 11:15 a.m. Nov. 25 at 2082 Cedar Hall.
