Gazette senior photojournalist Jim Slosiarek “saw this photo coming together in my head” when he was photographing the Oct. 28 inauguration of Coe College President David Hayes at Sinclair Memorial Auditorium in Cedar Rapids. “I knew my camera's exposure meter might be fooled by the dark-robed figures, so I intentionally under-exposed the scene to darken the afternoon sky,” Slosiarek said. “I set the camera on the ground and fired off a few test frames so I had the correct angle that included the top of the spire on the auditorium.” This shot was the best of the string, he said, because of the raised arm and the position of the figures at right.
