Gazette journalists can count on one hand the number of times we’ve each been inside a school building since last March, when schools rapidly closed due to coronavirus concerns. So I was cautiously optimistic when we were able to join Iowa Department of Education Director Ann Lebo visiting area schools.

Visually, I sought to focus on Lebo as the reason for the visit, while including the students who were chosen to help showcase their school. Some things were different: Masks were required, we didn’t linger in any one area for too long, some furniture had been removed from rooms to allow for more spacing, and people stood at a distance while talking. But for the most part, it was remarkable for how entirely normal it felt.
