Iowa Photo: Pink full moon
The art of chasing a fast-moving moon

“Chasing the pink super moon was harder than I thought it was going to be,” said photojournalist Savannah Blake. “I found out about the pink full moon the day before it was set to rise and figured I would try and get a glimpse of this interesting event.
“I was on my way to Indian Creek Nature Center since the moon was rising in that direction. I climbed a small hill and over the horizon saw the full moon shining bright through the trees. I pulled over on the side of the road with my hazards on to try and capture the moon while it had a reddish pink hue to it.
“This was the first time I’ve photographed the moon and wasn’t used to how fast the moon moves. As soon as I parked and the moon was in the perfect position, I would grab my camera and it had shifted already! I follow the moon as it rose for a while, but was a little sad to see the pink hue fade so quickly.
“When shooting the moon opt for a longer lens or get a teleconverter to increase the focal length you have. I shot with a 200-400 lens and would definitely use a teleconverter next time to get a really close shot of the moon. However, the 200-400 was great for a shot of the landscape.
“For my first time full moon hunting I had a lot of fun, but now that I’ve gotten some experience under my belt I would love to go back out and get some new and different shots and find new vantage points to capture the moon.”
