Iowa Photo: Nothing but wet

C-Hawks Youth Basketball team members Yeivier Martinez and Jeremiah Dargitz, both 12, play tag with soapy sponges April 19 in the Hy-Vee grocery store parking lot at 812 S. First Ave. on Iowa City. The C-Hawks formed about three years ago for players from sixth grade through junior high. The team hosts fundraisers -- like this car wash in the Hy-Vee parking lot -- to help kids pay for the season.

“I came across a local travel basketball team’s fundraiser while searching for a nearby gas station after covering the Iowa City Girls’ soccer game,” said Gazette photojournalist Elizabeth Wood. “Seeing the team out there, I decided to pull over and get a few photos of them washing cars. There was a moment while the team members were waiting for a vehicle to get rinsed off when I noticed two members running around and trying to tag each other with their soapy sponges. The scene felt nostalgic; it reminded me of all the times my siblings and I would do the same while we helped our grandparents wash their cars.”
