1892 house bought for $1 moved 16 miles from North Liberty to rural Oxford

Workers move a 19th century house Tuesday along Penn Street west of North Liberty. The house was being moved 16 miles from North Liberty to rural Oxford by Washington, Iowa-based Goodwin House Moving Inc. The 100.5-ton house was built in 1892. The homeowners paid $1 for the dwelling but had to pay for the move. Eight electric companies were involved in clearing utility lines along the route. Two railroad companies, deputies from two county sheriff's offices and officers from the North Liberty Police Department provided traffic control. Streets department workers from North Liberty and Tiffin took down road signs allowing the 44-foot-wide, 43-foot-tall and 75.5-foot-long house to clear the sides of the streets.
