A woman who sued two FIJI fraternity members for sexually assaulting her in 2020 and the fraternities national affiliates has resolved her lawsuit against all parties.

A former University of Iowa student who three years ago filed a lawsuit against the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, its UI chapter, and two former fraternity brothers she accused of sexually assaulting her, filming it, and sharing the images via social media has dropped her case against the fraternity and one of the brothers she sued.

Just over two months until the civil trial of two former University of Iowa fraternity brothers is supposed to begin in Tama County -- after the case was relocated from Johnson County due to its high-profile nature -- parties on both sides are asking a judge to preemptively rule in their favor.

The criminal trial of a former University of Iowa student and fraternity brother arrested in connection with an alleged 2020 sexual assault, which was supposed to start this week, has been postponed pending a related civil trial.

More than a year away from a trial of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, its University of Iowa chapter, and two former brothers -- accused of sexually assaulting a fellow UI student, recording the attack, and disseminating the video -- a judge has agreed to move the case outside Johnson County, citing a “violent protest” and “inflammatory” online comments after allegations went public two years ago.

In pushing a judge to move out of Johnson County a trial involving a University of Iowa student’s sexual assault allegations against the FIJI fraternity and former members, defense attorneys this week pointed to the likelihood of a scared juror pool.

Despite pushback from accused former University of Iowa students and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity with which they were involved, a lawsuit alleging alcohol- and drug-assisted sexual violence and “malicious and intentional circulation” of photos and videos is ongoing and headed for trial in July.

The University of Iowa chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity has responded to a lawsuit accusing it of aiding and abetting two brothers accused of sexually assaulting a student last year, renouncing any responsibility and blaming the accuser of unethical behavior.

Fifteen months after a University of Iowa student reported she was sexually assaulted by two fraternity brothers, who then shared video and pictures of the attack, Iowa City police have arrested one of the accused men, Carson Douglas Steffen, on a harassment charge.

A report of sexual assault at the University of Iowa-based Phi Gamma Delta fraternity that spawned widespread protests across campus earlier this fall now is at the center of a lawsuit seeking enough money to “satisfactorily punish defendants and provide future deterrence to others.”

University of Iowa administrators since August 2020 have had more than a dozen interactions about violations at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity — which in recent weeks has been at the center of campus protests demanding its removal from campus. But none of those interactions have involved allegations of sexual violence.
