IOWA CITY - In honor of International Women's Day, a rally is set to take place Wednesday afternoon to protest a piece of Iowa legislation that would enforce the state wide minimum wage - effectively eliminating Johnson County's recent rate hike.
Called 'We're Not Going Back” the event is scheduled to take place Wednesday at the Ped Mall in downtown Iowa City from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Organizers plan to protest House File 295, a bill discussed last month that would take away city and county authority to pass a minimum wage higher than the state's $7.25 rate.
'The majority of minimum wage workers are women,” stated the event's Facebook page. 'Many of us led the struggle for a higher wage two years ago. Our labor is worth more than poverty wages.”
The bill also would take away local governments' ability to adopt civil ordinances that go beyond consumer merchandise ordinances or the statewide standard, such as a ban on plastic bags.
The event is hosted by the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa and the Iowa City Federation of Labor.

Students from City High and West High lead a march though downtown following the Solidarity Rally Against the Ban on the Ped Mall in Iowa City on Sunday, February 5, 2017. The event was organized by the Muslim-Jewish Solidarity Alliance, the Center for Worker Justice, and Students Against Hate & Discrimination in response to a recent executive order by President Trump temporily barring the admission of refugees and entry to the US from seven majority-Muslim countries.
