Located in Dubuque County, about 90 minutes northeast of Cedar Rapids, the Field of Dreams was built for use in the 1989 movie of the same name. Starring Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, Amy Madigan and Burt Lancaster, the movie was nominated for an Academy Award and became a pop culture sensation.

To this day, you can hear folks repeat several of the films most memorable lines: 'If you build it, they will come,' and 'Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa.'

Thousands come to the field every year for an experience like no other.

A visit to the Field of Dreams is simple, and you don't need to take batting practice, field grounders or shag fly balls to have a good time, although everyone is certainly welcome to do so.

If you're not into that, wander into the outfield and walk into the cornfield that extends back from the outfield wall, just as Liotta's Shoeless Joe Jackson character did in the movie.

Admission to the field is free, and you can stay as long as you'd like.

1) Play a game of catch with your kids.

2) Try to hit one into the cornfield while taking batting practice.

3) Field grounders and shag fly balls; there's always someone at the plate.

4) Sit in the stands along the first base line and watch the action, just like Kevin Costner and his family did in the movie.

5) Run the bases.

6) Walk into the cornfield, just as Ray Liotta did in the movie. Then take a video of your family members emerging from the corn onto the field.

7) Sing the national anthem while standing under the flagpole in right field.

8) Take a stroll and look for cool rocks on the paths behind the outfield corn wall.

9) Take a tour of the historic Lansing farm house used in the movie.

10) Grab some ice cream and buy a souvenir at the gift shop.

Though vandalism damaged the site over the winter, it should be open and ready for visitors this spring.

To round out your trip to the Field of Dreams, plan your day around lunch or dinner at Chad's Pizza, 108 First Ave. W in Dyersville. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Start by ordering the 'Garbage Basket' appetizer featuring onion rings, mozzarella sticks, cheddar balls, mini tacos, breaded mushrooms and breaded dill pickle spears.

Follow that up with one of Chad's signature pizzas: the Hawkeye — topped with sausage, pepperoni and Canadian bacon, along with mozzarella, American and cheddar cheeses and black olives — is especially delicious. Chad's has a nice, small-town atmosphere, and the service is friendly and high quality.
