Best Bet: Independence Underground Tour
Hoopla
Aug. 16, 2018 2:18 pm
Saturday is your only chance this year to see the 'hidden remains” of the 1873-74 era of First Street East in Independence. Sidewalks opened during a 2012 construction project revealed early limestone walls, doors and windows beneath the street. Many building owners installed vaults to preserve that history. Seven of those vaults will be visible on this year's self-guided underground walking tour, which takes about two hours and starts at the Wapsi Mill. Participants also can see early advertisements in the Chamber of Commerce building loft.
