Winter Survival Skills Program: Being Prepared for the Unexpected

Oxford, IA – Iowa's winter weather can be unpredictable, even with the latest technological advancements!! Are you prepared for the unexpected?? Could you safely start a fire to keep your self warm or build an improvised shelter? Do you have a first aid kit and winter weather preparedness kit in your vehicle? If you answered no to these questions or maybe you just want to refresh your winter survival skills then the Johnson County Conservation Board has just the class for you. Naturalist Brad Freidhof will be providing a Winter Survival Skills class on January 8th, 2011 at the Conservation Education Center at F.W. Kent Park beginning at 1 p.m. The class will discuss improvised winter shelters, fire starting and gear suggestions for you vehicle. Winter weather and accidents happen, but by equipping yourself with a little knowledge and gear you can be better prepared for whatever is thrown your way.
Participants should dress for outdoor activity in accordance to the weather, remember to check the wind chill and bring extra clothes if necessary. Hot drinks will be available in the Conservation Education Center allowing people to warm up.
