Iowans are invited to venture outside on New Year’s Day to participate in a First Day Hike at one of dozens of state parks across Iowa.
The annual tradition is organized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as part of a national push to get people outside on the first day of the year.
First Day Hikes began in Massachusetts in 1992, and spread across the country in 2012 under America’s State Parks.
In Iowa this year, more than 40 state parks will host either a guided group hike or they will offer a suggested self-guided hike.
“We are excited to host First Day Hikes again, showcasing the quiet beauty of Iowa state parks and forests in winter,” said Sherry Arntzen, chief of the Iowa DNR’s Parks, Forests and Preserves Bureau. “These hikes are a great way to get outside, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family.”
The guided hikes are being offered in 23 state parks. The average distance is one to three miles. Some park Friends Groups will host snacks and hot beverages in addition to the hike. Those planning to participate are encouraged to dress for the weather.
Guided hikes will be held at the following Eastern Iowa state parks:
- Backbone State Park in Dundee
- Bellevue State Park in Bellevue
- Cedar Rock State Park in Independence
- Lake Darling State Park in Brighton
- Lake Macbride State Park in Solon
- Maquoketa Caves State Park in Maquoketa
- Mines of Spain State Park in Dubuque
- Palisades-Kepler State Park in Mount Vernon
- Pikes Peak State Park in McGregor
- Yellow River State Forest in Harpers Ferry
An additional 21 parks are offering staff-picked, self-guided hikes.
