Voting is a signature part of our freedoms as Americans. The19th Amendment to the Constitution allows women the right to vote This right was hard won. Last year was the centennial of this 100-year battle for suffrage which involved many heroic women, including Iowa’s Carrie Chapman Catt. These women worked to raise awareness and lobbied state and federal governments for voting rights.
The Cedar Rapids Metro Area Indivisible has planned an outdoor event to mark the passage of the 19th Amendment and encourage all voters to participate in the electoral process.
Our “Celebrate the Vote” event will be held at the Red Oak Pavilion at Bever Park on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. The program will begin at 1:30, consisting of a proclamation by the mayor’s office, an overview of new voting laws from our auditor’s office, brief presentations by mayoral candidates and an update on the status of the Equal Rights Amendment. Our featured speaker will be author Lyz Lenz.
Elected officials and candidates from the U.S. House of Representatives to the state and local level have been invited to attend. Voter registration will available as well as a replica of the original suffrage wagon. Please join us to commemorate and celebrate.
