Bigger and bigger burgers can’t replace classics

A recent Gazette pictured a hamburger the giant from “Jack and the Beanstalk" couldn't get his mouth around. This contest of who can slam more ingredients into a hamburger bun has gone off the chart. Not to mention a calorie count that weighs more than the burger.
There were the old days when a burger was a burger. Erma’s joint in Decorah was one of our favorites. An “Erma Burger” would feature the traditional pickles, onions, and cheese toppings. A fried egg on the top was the custom job. And this would all fit into your mouth. It hasn’t gotten any better than that.
