Be appreciative of security guards at Casey's

In “Armed security at Casey's in Iowa City's south side raises concerns” (May 7), it is stated that the Broadway store has had less calls than another store in town as if the presence of a security guard is not warranted. I suggest that his presence may be the reason for a slightly lower number of calls to the police.
Casey's has a stake in ensuring safety at their stores in order to maintain profits and a place in the neighborhood. The store is not only convenient for last minute purchases but a place to greet friends and neighbors. It is easy for critics to claim racism. They have no stake in maintaining the property and the safety of the place. Casey's is in the best position to determine what is good for their customers.
People should be more appreciative of businesses that make our lives easier and safer rather that playing the typical Iowa City blame game.
