Linn-Mar’s Morgan Rupp shot even-par 72 in the second round for a 141 total, winning third title at the Class 4A state golf meet Friday at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association state golf tournament begins Monday. The Class 3A tournament will be held at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. Capsules for the Iowa high school state cross country meet Friday and Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course

Gazette-area Class 2A cross country runners compete in state-qualifying meets at Monticello, Oelwein and Pella, 1A at Iowa City, Jewell, Pleasantville and Troy Mills.

Even though the school colors are black and gold, Maquoketa Valley players, coaches and fans wore a lot of purple Friday night for its football game at North Linn. It was in honor of the father of junior running back-linebacker Dylan Knipper, who is fighting pancreatic cancer.

High school cross country: Oelwein’s Conall Sauser and Tipton’s Noelle Steines won individual titles at the Anamosa Invitational. The Oelwein boys and Fort Madison girls were team champions.

MFL MarMac football coach Dan Anderson didn’t have anyone on his team’s roster who had ever played quarterback, other than an incoming freshman. So he brought in a quarterback tutor in the spring and conducted a tryout that senior Carter Stoddard won. He completed 8 of 11 passes for 110 yards in the team’s 28-13 win Friday night over Sumner-Fredericksburg, improving the Bulldogs to 4-1.
