ZENOLIA SCHIRM

Zenolia J. Schirm, 92, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating.
Interment will be at St. John Cemetery in Newhall. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church in Newhall. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established for the Newhall First Responders or St. John Lutheran Church.
Zenolia was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Iowa County, the daughter of George and Wanda (Robertson) Meier. She married Irvin H. Schirm on April 2, 1938, at St. Stephen's Lutheran parsonage in Atkins. They shared 60 wonderful years until Irvin passed away in 1998.
Zenolia was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a Gold Star member of the Newhall American Legion Auxiliary. She had volunteered 3,500 hours at the Iowa City VA Health Care System. She loved to play cards and had been a member of numerous card clubs through the years. She also enjoyed solving word puzzles.
Zenolia is survived by her daughter, Delores (Lynn) Pickering of Newhall; her son, Harold (Rosemary) Schirm of Philadelphia, Pa.; five grandchildren, Tami Pickering, Jodi (Scott) England, Brent (Erin) Schirm, Derek (Kristin) Schirm and Cassie (James) Yang; eight great-grandchildren, Brittney, Marcus, Tyler, Makayla, Alivia, David, Max and Elizabeth; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Schirm and Luella Meier; her brother-in-law, Kenneth Schirm; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Irvin; her son, Charles; three grandsons, Mark Pickering, Jeffery Schirm and Brian Schirm; and her siblings, Karl, George Jr., Cleo and Darlene.
