Zeman, 86, of Mercy Hallmar, died there Thursday afternoon, Aug. 6, 2009. All Saints Catholic Church Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Father David O'Connor. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 J St. SW, and after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A vigil service begins at 7 p.m. Monday and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
Bernard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; sisters, Margaret (Lumear) Netolicky, Cedar Rapids, and Carol Corrigan, Clive; nieces, Kathie Corrigan, Chicago, and Ann (Dr. Chris) McDonald, Urbandale; nephew, John (Missy) Corrigan, Alexandria, Va.; great-niece and great-nephew, Meghan and Connor McDonald.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Ida (Formanek) Zeman; stepmother, Agnes Zeman; and brother-in-law, James Corrigan.
Bernard was born March 29, 1923, in Garner and came to Cedar Rapids in 1940 from Dedham in Carroll County, Iowa. He married Dorothy L. Bell on Sept. 25, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Bernie worked at Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. for several years and then was employed by Brinks Security for 31 years until his retirement.
Bernie was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, where he was a dedicated usher and greeter. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 5677, Bowen General Assembly 269 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Cadets of St. George Branch 45 Catholic Workman, Lodge Cedar 7 WFLA, South Side Civic Club and he belonged to the Cedar Rapids Executive Club.
Contributions in Bernard's memory may be given to All Saints Catholic Church and Hospice of Mercy.
