Zalesky, Doris Anne
Doris Anne Zalesky, 82, of Shueyville, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 4, at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, with Father Tom McDermott presiding. Burial will follow in Shueyville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. parish vigil. Visitation also will be one hour before the service Friday at the church.
Doris was born Nov. 13, 1928, on a farm near Prairieburg, the daughter of John and Mary (Casey) McDonnell. She married Leonard Zalesky on June 11, 1957, in Coggon. She graduated from Mount Mercy College with a degree in Elementary Education. Doris taught in the Norway School District. She was a longtime member of St. Ludmila's Catholic Church. She enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, gardening, playing cards, cooking, attending sporting events and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Doris was a loving wife, dedicated mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
Doris is survived by her husband, Leonard; her children, Cathy (John) Birch of Olathe, Kan., Lennie (Maria) Zalesky of Woodland, Calif., Jim (Teri) Zalesky of Corvallis, Ore., Larry (Laura) Zalesky of Cedar Rapids, Theresa (Jay) Koehn and Chris (Jim) Heick, all of Solon, and Diane (Kevin) Berns of North Liberty; 20 grandchildren; sisters, Helen (Kenny) Barker of Coggon, Jeanne Theissen of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Dick (JoAnn) McDonnell of Quincy, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Leona Edwards of Cosgrove; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ronald and John McDonnell; her sister, Vera Houlihan; and granddaughter, Alison Birch.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or to the donor's choice in Doris's name.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, who took such loving care of Doris. A special thanks to Father Tom McDermott and Chaplain Joe Kane for their spiritual guidance during this time.
