Young Sr., David Lee 'Whoop'
David Lee “Whoop” Young Sr., 68, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral service: 10 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with the Rev. Barb Tieszen officiating. Interment: Spring Grove Cemetery near Covington, with graveside military rites. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial fund has been established.
David was born July 29, 1941, to Gaylord and Lillian (Waite) Young, in Cedar Rapids. During Vietnam he served his nation in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Shellsburg Legion. On July 23, 1965, he married Mary Gott at Walker. Before his retirement David was employed as a machine mechanic.
He is survived by his children, Jim (Sandra) Young, Center Point, David (Christine) Young Jr., Shellsburg, Scott (Angela) Young, Center Point, and Tina Young, Center Point; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two sisters and his dog, Jiggs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Angel Marie; two brothers and three sisters.
