Young, Shirley J.
Shirley J. Young, 72, of Iowa City, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, at Lighthouse at Silvis (Silvis, Ill. after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, with the Rev. Maria Wiblin officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the West Branch Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be directed to The Lighthouse at Silvis, 1900 10th St., Silvis, IL 61282.
Shirley Jean Romaine Young was born to Harold and Hazel Romaine on Sept. 20, 1938, in Santa Ana, Calif. Shirley attended and graduated from West Liberty High School in May 1957. She graduated from nurses training at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids in May 1960. Shirley later returned to school to receive her bachelor's of science degree in nursing in 1994 from Iowa Wesleyan College.
She married L. Ray Young at the West Liberty Methodist Church on Aug. 20, 1960. Shirley and Ray had three children, Julie (Mike) Poli, Kris (Steve) Rock and Rick Young (Mary Alice).
Shirley retired from nursing after 40 years in March 2000. She worked most of those years at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Shirley had been an Iowa City resident for 17 years and was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City. Shirley was an avid reader, enjoyed music, dancing, cooking and playing cards. She so enjoyed her children, grandchildren and doing for others, along with her nursing duties.
Shirley is survived by her mother, Hazel Romaine of West Liberty; daughters, Julie (Mike) Poli of Phoenix, Ariz., Kris (Steve) Rock of Stockton, Iowa and Rick (Mary Alice) Young of Streamwood, Ill.; grandchildren, Ryan, Lucas and Brad Bohnsack, Kyle and Jorie Young and Justin Jackson; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Young; father, Harold Romaine; sister, Barb Kline; and nephew, James Kline.
