Yeries, Leo
Leo Yeries, 96, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Hallmar Care Center, following a long illness. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors following the mass.
Leo H. Yeries was born Oct. 3, 1917, in rural Johnson County township, Iowa, the son of Barney and Ann Yeries. Leo attended University High in Iowa City. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Leo entered the service in 1939 and served overseas for 42 months in the Southwest Pacific until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Leo was then united in marriage to Mary A. Kozlik on Sept. 8, 1945, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Leo farmed outside of Alburnett and Walford until he retired after 35 years in 1980. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his two children, Linda Yeries of Cedar Rapids and Eugene Yeries of Norway; two grandchildren, Jessica (Shawn) Michael and Cari Yeries; one great-grandson, Kaden Michael; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Yeries; six brothers and six sisters.
The family would like to thank all the staff from Hallmar Care Center and Mercy Medical Center for their love, support and tender care given to Leo.
A memorial fund has been established by the family for St. Ludmila's Catholic Church.
